Do you have a first aid kit in your home? A first aid kit can be a fantastic tool to keep around you at all times in case of an emergency. Not sure what you should have in your at-home first aid kit? We have outlined some of the most important items you should have below!
Things Every First Aid Kit Should Have
First Aid Manual: A first aid manual will give you simple instructions on how to handle the most common injuries and medical emergencies. Make sure you read it beforehand in preparation for an emergency!
Gloves: Used to protect you and whoever you may be treating, gloves are imperative to prevent the transmission of infection. Check in to see if you have non-latex or latex gloves as some people may be allergic.
Adhesive bandages: Possibly the most commonly used item on this list, adhesive bandages provide great protection for small cuts and scrapes. Be sure to include some different sizes.
Gauze bandages: When a cut is too large for an adhesive bandage, a gauze bandage must be used. There are many different sizes of gauze rolls and pads, including an assortment will ensure you are prepared for anything. For major external bleeding, remember to apply direct pressure!
Triangular bandages: These versatile bandages can be used to create a sling for injuries such as breaks, fractures or sprains, or can be used to support gauze pads for major bleeds.
Instant Ice Pack: Ice can be extremely helpful to reduce swelling, pain and discomfort. Having an instant ice pack allows you to have access to ice whenever you need it. Remember to never apply an ice pack directly to the skin and to take breaks from application.
Disinfectant: Disinfectants such as alcohol wipes should be used to clean a wound before applying a bandage. This can help prevent infection.
Medical Tape: Different from regular tape as it does not leave a residue on the skin, medical tape can be used to secure gauze bandages over an injury.
Scissors: A staple for any first aid kit, scissors can be used to cut clothing, medical tape, and other first aid supplies if necessary.
Tweezers: Tweezers can be used to remove splinters, dirt, and other debris from the skin.
Pocket Mask: A pocket mask is a device that is used to protect you and the victim when administering breaths during CPR.
